Fire Destroys Nagpur Transport Godowns

As per our sources, a fire on Sunday 1 November destroyed transport company godowns in the Small Factory Area on Old Bhandara Road in Wardhaman Nagar, Nagpur. The Times of India reported that the fire began around 7am in a plastic packaging godown, gutted seven godowns and partly damaged three more, with losses estimated at ₹4.81 crore. The Live Nagpur reported four sheds affected and about eight fire tenders at the scene, while The Times of India put the number of fire vehicles at about 10. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Rahul Madne confirmed there were no injuries, according to The Live Nagpur.

This is significant as The Times of India reported that sheds had been extended into open spaces and over part of a drain, which slowed firefighters, who needed eight hours and about 4 lakh litres of water. More than 15 truckloads of goods, three pick-up trucks and an autorickshaw were destroyed, and the cause is not yet known. Police, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the fire department will check building legality, municipal permissions and fire NOCs (no objection certificates), The Live Nagpur reported.

We believe that the bigger risk here is the unplanned conversion of old industrial units into rented godowns, since this site was a former steel unit split into 10 godowns for transport operators. Landlords who extended sheds without approval stand to lose most, along with tenants without adequate insurance, while warehouse parks with approved fire systems gain tenants. Coverage misses whether these godowns held valid fire NOCs or insurance, and neither report named the owners. NMC ruling party leader Narendra Borkar has demanded a probe with a report within 10 days, and MLA Krishna Khopde visited the site. We predict, with medium confidence, that the NMC will issue notices or sealing orders to other godowns in the Small Factory Area by 30 November 2026.

This holds significance for our readers because many transport operators store goods in converted sheds like these. This week, check that your godown has a current fire NOC and that its exits and access roads are clear. Confirm that your stock insurance covers the full value of goods you hold for clients.
